When I first found Burrito, he was just a tiny kitten abandoned in a cardboard box — trembling, dehydrated, and barely able to drink. His little tail was badly injured, and he looked so fragile that I wasn’t sure if he would survive the night. But there was something in his eyes that said he wanted to live, and I knew I couldn’t walk away.

I took him to the vet in Malaysia right away. His tail needed care, but what really needed healing was his trust in the world. The vet wrapped him up and treated his wound, and I came up with a makeshift tail cone to help him recover. Every day I fed him, cleaned his wound, and whispered to him softly — just to let him know he wasn’t alone anymore.

Over time, his fear gave way to curiosity. He started following me everywhere, meowing for attention, curling up beside me while I worked. He was supposed to be a temporary rescue, but one night when he fell asleep in my lap, I knew he was staying. That’s how Burrito Cat officially became part of my family.

When we eventually returned to Hong Kong, Burrito had to meet my other cats — and that wasn’t easy. He was defensive, a little possessive, and unsure how to fit in. But with patience and gentle introductions, he slowly learned that he didn’t have to fight for love here. He could just exist and be accepted.

Then came Strawberry, another rescue with her own complicated story. Watching Burrito try to make sense of this new friendship was both hilarious and heartwarming. They bickered, they played, they learned from each other — just like any relationship built on two strong personalities learning to share a space.

Burrito’s story is a reminder of how fragile beginnings can lead to beautiful lives. From a box on the street to a warm home filled with love, he’s proof that every life deserves a second chance.

I didn’t set out to keep him — I just wanted to save him. But sometimes, the animals we rescue end up rescuing us right back.
