When I first found Burrito, he was a tiny kitten barely clinging to life. He had been abandoned in a box on the streets of Malaysia, weak, sick, and crying out for help. His condition was heartbreaking. Most people would have walked by, but something about his fragile cry made me stop. I knew I could not leave him there.

At the vet, I learned just how bad it was. The injuries were serious, and I was told it would be better to put him down. Some even said it was not worth the effort to save a street cat when there were so many healthy ones waiting for homes. But when I looked at him, I saw a little soul who still wanted to live. I decided that as long as he was fighting, I would fight with him.
I stayed in Malaysia to care for him. Every few hours I cleaned his wounds, changed his bandages, and made sure he was fed and warm. He became known as “Burrito Cat” because of the way I wrapped him snugly after each treatment. Despite the pain he endured, he purred through it all. His strength amazed me.
Over time, he began to recover. His eyes grew brighter, and his appetite returned. Soon, he started exploring the room and chasing after his own shadow. It was the kind of progress that only happens when love and persistence meet.
When he was finally healthy enough, Burrito came home with me to Hong Kong. After months of care, flights, and sleepless nights, he was ready for a new chapter. What I did not expect was how quickly he would make himself at home. Though he was the smallest cat in the house, he walked in with quiet confidence and, within days, ruled over all seven of my other cats. He was fearless, playful, and curious about everything.
Later, Burrito met Strawberry, one of my other rescues. At first, they were cautious of each other, but over time, they became inseparable. One rainy night during a thunderstorm, I found them sleeping side by side, Burrito’s head resting gently against Strawberry’s paw. It was a simple moment that carried so much meaning. After everything he had been through, Burrito had finally found peace.
Burrito’s story is a reminder that no act of compassion is ever wasted. When I found him, he had no reason to believe the world could be kind, but love proved him wrong. Every time I see him now, full of confidence and life, I am reminded that a little persistence goes a long way and that nothing is truly impossible when you choose to care. See video here!
